Welcome new and returning MFW students! While on campus, I hope you have a chance to spend some time in the library.
We have a new exhibit on the history of the college, entitled:
The History of Goddard College Exhibit, 1969-1979
By 1970 Goddard College had become known for being a radical institution and was seen as being part of the countercultural movement. The country was in a state of cultural upheaval and the youth were increasingly becoming disenchanted with authority and the status quo. Goddard was able to appeal to this new generation through its educational philosophy which is inherently anti-establishment and action oriented. Goddard’s focus on the learning by doing method of education was appealing to students who were already engaged in efforts to create social change as a way to receive academic credit for meaningful work done outside of the classroom.
Collection Development:
You may notice some changes in the library upstairs. There are fewer books on the shelves as we have performed an extensive weeding projects. De-accessing is an important part of collection management. The time consuming nature of the task often prevents it from happening. But we managed to accomplish this piece of work in the fall, thus maximizing the value of the collection. We removed about 12K items – superseded editions, out-of date works and items in poor condition.
Concerning our online resources offerings, the number of downloadable ebooks has substantially increase. Our ebrary collection now entails about 60 K downloadable titles in a broad range of disciplines. They are accessible on most computers and e-reader devices. There are 2 options for downloading:
a) You may download a chapter or range of pages in standard image – pdf format.
b) You can download the entire document in Adobe Digital Editions format (Adobe Digital Editions is free online.)
You may consult the online guide for additional information.
As always – your feedback and questions are welcome. Please stop by to talk to us or send us an email. We also have a suggestion box for feedback on paper. This is located in the library on top of the book drop.
With Best Wishes for the New Year!
Clara
